St. Stephen’s Day is a national day of Hungary, celebrated every year on August 20. This day is considered Constitution Day or Foundation Day. It is also called the “day of the new bread” following the tradition of bread cutting for the new harvest.
It is celebrated in good memory of the ancient King St. Stephen, the first king of Hungary who founded the state by converting the natives into Christianity and led the Hungarian Church. It was first celebrated on August 20, 1092. It was also considered a feast day until 1687 when it was made a national day.
