KABUL 22nd August 2024 (TDI): AfghanTaliban on Thursday publicly flogged a man in the eastern province of Khost after being convicted of “insulting religious sanctities,” according to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court. The man received 39 lashes in front of a crowd.
This incident follows a similar public flogging a day earlier in Kabul, where a woman was lashed for alleged adultery and sentenced to two years in prison.
Despite ongoing condemnation from the United Nations and global human rights organizations, the Taliban persist with corporal punishments, including public floggings.
Amnesty International recently marked the third anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power on August 15 with a report condemning the group’s actions.
The report accused the Taliban of committing atrocities in Afghanistan with “absolute impunity” under international law and criticized the global community and the United Nations for their failure to address the humanitarian crisis in the country.
