Additional USAID COVID-19 assistance to Angola

Global Vax meeting
US government's initiative for Global Access to Vaccine for COVID

Luanda, 10 May 2022 (TDI): USAID, through Global VAX, provided an additional $25 million to assist Angola in receiving COVID-19 vaccines. This announcement was made by the Deputy Secretary of State of the United States.

Through the Global VAX, the US government has funded the entry of resources into Angola. This money goes toward programs that improve vaccination delivery and raise vaccine awareness.

It also helps to meet the demand, provides technical support, and grows access through mobile promotions. This balances Angola’s existing immunization strategies and aids in the timely and fair distribution of vaccines.

The funds are in addition to the over 8 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines donated to Angola by the US government. Global VAX is designed to meet the global goal to vaccinate 70 percent of the world population against COVID-19 in 2022.

Global VAX provides additional resources and helps to expand access to COVID-19 vaccinations. This effort covers a number of African countries, including Angola.

This also follows President Biden’s pledge to donate over 1.2 billion vaccination doses worldwide by the end of 2022. It also increases efforts to get shots in the arms. The United States has so far contributed $1.7 billion to vaccine readiness efforts.

US Assistance

As Dr. Tulinabo Mushingo, US Ambassador to Angola, said, “COVID-19 has demonstrated how health can also be a security challenge. The US is proud to be the largest donor of COVID-19 vaccines to Angola.

The US provided more than 8 million doses of vaccines to the Ministry of Health for the Angolan people. This was in addition to more than USD 38 million in assistance, medical supplements, and formation.

This is just the latest chapter in our long-standing support for the Angolan health sector over the past 20 years. More than USD 25 million in the emergency assistance is being provided by the new US Global Vaccine Access Initiative.

Global VAX will support the Angolan government’s efforts to accelerate access to COVID-19 vaccines in Angola.”

The Ministry of Health’s continued efforts are well matched with the extra Global VAX resources. They contribute to the national COVID-19 immunization plan’s speed up. The US government and its allies work together with Angola’s Ministry of Public Health.

This will assist in building up local health systems and developing vaccine access to vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups. The US government is committed to assisting in the promotion of a healthier Angola.

Angola has received around $1.48 billion in US government support over the previous 25 years. Over $613 million was spent on health issues. Malaria, HIV, COVID-19, family planning, and nutrition have been the focus of US health funds.

The government has the resources and skills to assist Angola’s government in responding to COVID-19. The government is working to improve labs, increase response capacity, and improve communication.

It also expects the distribution of information and the provision of clean water to vulnerable populations. It also advances the provision of safety equipment and the support of military hospitals.
