Los Angeles (TDI): The blockbuster adaptation of the 2011 game “Minecraft” surpassed box office forecasts, generating $162.75 million domestically and having the largest opening weekend of the year.
The blockbuster movie starred Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Emma Myers.
Directed by Jared Hess, “A Minecraft Movie” follows the story of a group of four people, who banded together with Steve (Jack Black) to defend the Overworld from evil forces.
Industry observers initially predicted that Warner Bros. Pictures’ “A Minecraft Movie” would generate a maximum of $60 million, before increasing their estimation to around $100 million.
ComScore reported, on Sunday, that the film had generated around $157 million domestically, while the international markers contributed another $151 million.
It brought the global opening weekend total of the movie to a staggering $314 million.

“This is the first major over-performance,” Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at ComScore, had said.
“A Minecraft Movie” had outperformed Disney’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” which had the highest opening weekend in 2025 with $88.5 million.
According to Shawn Robbins, Director of movie analytics at Fandango and inventor of Box Office Theory said, “Pre-sales and interest accelerated in a remarkable way during the run-up to opening night.”
Robbins pointed out that several teenagers and college students were on spring break when the film premiered, which had benefitted some markets.
Mixed reactions to trailers have likely contributed to conservative box-office forecast for “A Minecraft Movie”.
However, box office analyst David A. Gross stated that this video game adaptation had appealed a broad audience, despite what the critics had said.
“When a release catches fire like this, it generates its own momentum and you can set aside all projections,” David A. Gross remarked.

With a production budget of $150 million, the movie has already become a financial success.
Experts think it might surpass $1 billion if current trend persists.
Given the massive fan base of the video game Minecraft, with more than 140 million monthly players, the film’s outstanding performance is not altogether unexpected.
However, the sheer scale of the success has still astounded the analysts.
In the United States and Canada alone, the picture had grossed $157 million, putting it at the top of the 2025 domestic box office, surpassing “Captain America: Brave New World,” which had premiered with $88.8 million.
Now the expectation is that “A Minecraft Movie” would exceed the $1.3 billion milestone set by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
