Islamabad (TDI): Renowned actor Saba Qamar has been named UNICEF’s first-ever National Ambassador for Child Rights in Pakistan.
The announcement was made on the International Day of the Girl Child, a day aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by girls and promoting their empowerment across the globe.
In a ceremony, Qamar received her certificate of appointment from Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF’s country representative in Pakistan.
She expressed her gratitude and commitment to the cause, stating, “It’s an honour to join UNICEF. I will carry forward our shared mission of ensuring every right for every child, wherever I am.”
Qamar, known for her roles in Pakistani films like “Kamli” and Bollywood’s “Hindi Medium”, further remarked on the pressing issues faced by children and women during her travels across the country.
“I have witnessed the challenges they endure and the positive impact UNICEF’s efforts are making. I pledge to do my part for the children and young people of Pakistan, ensuring they can dream and have the chance to fulfil those dreams.”
As UNICEF’s National Ambassador, Qamar will focus on raising awareness about critical child rights issues such as child marriage, mental health, education, gender equality, climate change, and the effects of violence and poverty on young people.
Child Rights in Pakistan
Pakistan currently ranks sixth globally in the number of child brides, with 19 million girls affected.
More than half of adolescent girls in the country become pregnant before the age of 18, posing significant risks to both mother and child.
UNICEF has stressed the urgency of addressing child marriage in Pakistan, warning that without immediate action, the practice will continue for decades.

“A whole-of-society approach is essential to prevent this harmful tradition and safeguard the future of young girls, one of the nation’s most valuable untapped resources,” the organization stated.
Welcoming Qamar to the role, Abdullah Fadil shared his optimism for the collaboration. “Saba Qamar is a bold and influential voice for women’s and girls’ rights. We are eager to work closely with her to bring attention to the most pressing issues affecting children in Pakistan and to accelerate efforts to ensure every child reaches their full potential,” he said.
The actor also took to social media, sharing moments from her interactions with girls in a rural community. “Met some incredible people this week and had some unforgettable experiences. So many stories to tell—stay tuned!” Qamar captioned her post.
