Tashkent, (TDI): Uzbekistan has been selected to chair the Interstate Space Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for the years 2024-2025.
Shukhrat Kadirov, Director of the Uzbekcosmos agency, was unanimously elected as the chairman of the council during its Fifth Council meeting held in Tashkent.
The chairmanship, which rotates alphabetically among member states, was previously held by Tajikistan.
Kadirov, in his address, emphasized the need to enhance cooperation in space education and proposed joint initiatives to train young specialists.
He noted that the council faces significant challenges ahead, including coordination with the United Nations and strengthening collaboration in space technologies.
Earlier in August, Uzbekistan officially joined the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which governs the exploration and use of space.

The country has reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful space exploration and has pledged not to send weapons of mass destruction into space, advocating for the reduction of space militarization risks.

The CIS Interstate Space Council, formed to coordinate the space activities of its member countries, plays a crucial role in fostering cooperation in space research, technological development, and joint projects.
