More Trouble for Sheikh Hasina as US Cancels Visa, UK Denies Asylum

-

Washington, 6 August 2024 (TDI): The United States has revoked ousted Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s visa hours after the United Kingdom reportedly denied her request for political asylum.

Hasina stepped down from the office on Monday and flew to India in a military helicopter following weeks of violent protests. She landed in Agartala where the Indian National Security Advisor received her.

According to Dhaka Tribune, Bangladesh’s longest-serving premier wanted to record a speech but she did not have the opportunity as hundreds of thousands of protesters who had been protesting on the streets of the national capital, were about to enter the PM’s House.

On Wednesday evening, Hasina’s son told Indian media that she had no plans for a political comeback and that she would move to London. However, it was later reported that the UK government had turned down her request for asylum.

UK’s new policy under Kier Starmer requires asylum seekers to temporarily reside in another country where their conduct and reasons for seeking asylum will be assessed before being granted political asylum in the UK.

As a result, the UK has currently refused to provide asylum to Sheikh Hasina.
