Mogadishu, 1 July 2022 (TDI): Somalia is celebrating its 62nd Independence Day today. The day marks the formal union of British Somaliland, which gained independence on 26 June 1960, with Italian Somaliland.

To mark the historic day, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated the Somali people in a tweet celebrating the national day.

A special event to commemorate the national day also took place which was attended by the country’s new Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and the speakers of both houses of the parliament.

The President congratulated the people and affirmed Somalia’s commitment to achieving self-sufficiency and peace in the world.

Somalia’s political trajectory

Somalia’s political trajectory since its independence has been rife with violence. The country’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency has been challenged by the three decades of the ongoing civil war, terror outfits such as the Al-Shabaab which is linked with the Al-Qaida, and consistent political upheaval.

The United States of America had maintained an active presence in the country to curb terrorism. Biden administration announced that it would resume a small and persistent presence in Somalia after President Donald Trump pulled troops out in 2020.

Security remains a key challenge although, with the help of the African Union and international partners, Somalia has been able to build back a working political system and government institutions.
