New York, 12 September 2023 (TDI): The United Nations (UN) has scheduled the SDG Summit for September 18-19, 2023, to coincide with the General Assembly high-level week at its headquarters in New York.

This Summit holds great significance as it occurs at the midpoint of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

During this event, global leaders will undertake a comprehensive review of the status of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Likewise, they will address the compounded challenges posed by various crises, and provide high-level political guidance for accelerating progress towards the 2030 target.

However, it’s essential to remember that the agenda represents a commitment, not a guaranteed outcome. At this halfway juncture, the promise of the SDGs is facing significant threats.

Development progress is regressing for the first time in years due to the combined impacts of climate disasters, conflicts, economic downturns, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The SDG Summit is thus a call to action, urging world leaders to unite, assess the current status, and pledge to do more. It presents an opportunity to reaffirm a vision of the future where no one is left behind.

To reestablish progress toward the SDGs, fundamental changes in commitment, solidarity, financing, and action are imperative.
