Beijing, 24 June 2022 (TDI): The 14th BRICS summit was held in China today. President Xi Jinping chaired the virtually-held summit.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the Summit.

President Xi Jinping made the welcoming remarks. He embraced the spirit of inclusiveness and openness by the members of BRICS in this time of crises and complexities.

Moreover, he gave an important speech titled “Fostering High-quality Partnership and Embarking on a New Journey of BRICS Cooperation”.

He mentioned that the world today needs to uphold safeguards and solidarity to ensure global peace. He showed his concerns about the countries which are trying to expand their military alliances and form blocs to achieve their interests. Doing that will only increase global security tensions.

He said that BRICS must boost cooperation and development in order to counter rising global challenges. BRICS members need to improve industrial cooperation and connectivity to jointly tackle the rising challenges.

President Xi Jinping highlighted that as the representatives of the rising markets, the BRICS nations should choose the right path and take responsible actions at this critical time of history. The actions of BRICS nations will surely affect the fate of the world in the future.

Important consensus

The leaders of the five member states engaged in-depth exchange of ideas and views. The leaders highlighted the various common issues and interests.

They agreed that they should promote multilateralism, Safeguard justice, Work together for global governance, and should inject positive energy and stability into the contemporary turbulent international system.

They also agreed to respond against the Covid-19. Work jointly for equitable and fair distribution of vaccines and promote the BRICS Vaccine R&D Center mechanism.

They showed their consensus to promote global sustainable development. Also to give priority to addressing the issues and challenges of developing countries. Eradicate poverty, and hunger and counter climate changes.

Member countries agreed that they need to increase people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Also, they need to establish more projects in multiple sectors like political parties, think tanks, media, and sports to boost mutual learning.

The members also agreed to peruse the concept of “BRICS Plus” to have greater scope and increase the membership of the forum for better cooperation.
