Beijing, 16 June 2023 (TDI): On Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Bill Gates, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s co-chairperson, in Beijing.
First, Xi praised Bill Gates and his foundation for working consistently to reduce poverty and promote health, development, and philanthropy worldwide.
Then he added, “the foundation of China-U.S. relations lies in the people. We have always placed our hope on the American people and wish all the best for the friendship between the two peoples.”
Having that said, he reiterated that China, being the most populated country, should focus on solving its problems first as its long-term stability and sustained development is an important contribution towards global peace, development and security.
Besides that, Xi stated, “At present, momentous changes unseen in a century are accelerating across the world. I put forward the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative to provide Chinese solutions to global challenges.”
Considering China’s commitment to actively engaging in global efforts to address major challenges (climate change, pandemics, and poor public health), China will always be prepared to work closely with the Gates Foundation in relevant areas and offer support and assistance to other developing countries within its capabilities.
In response, Gates discussed the positive collaboration with China and his vision for the future. He acknowledged China’s impressive accomplishments in reducing poverty and responding to COVID-19, which serve as an inspiring example for the rest of the world.
