World Health Organization and Qatar team up

Geneva, 19 October 2021 (TDI): The State of Qatar, and the World Health Organization, announced their joint collaboration, for the World Cup. The reason is the upcoming World Cup, to promote mental health and to ensure the safety of future sports events.

QATARI, WHO, AND FIFA REPRESENTATIVES

Healthy 2022 World Cup-Creating Legacy for Sport and Health, is the title of the project. The project has a three-year duration. The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghrebreyesus, the Qatar Minister of Public Health, Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari; announced the project.

Also present at the announcement was the Secretary-General of the Qatari Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy. Then present the President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino; and the WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.

Working closely with FIFA, Qatar, and WHO will be part of joint activities. These activities are to promote health, in all its aspects; at the biggest football event. The World Cup will be held from 21 November to 18 December, in 2022. Another goal of the project is to set health, security, and safety practices.

TEDROS, AND AL KUWARI

This will help to see which practices work, and also which do not, for future sports events. Tedros thanked Al Kuwari and Qatar for its joint-venture with WHO; to then make the World Cup a role model. Ghrebreyesus reaffirmed the commitment of WHO to work with both Qatar and FIFA, to help people lead healthier lives.

Tedros also stated that the event provides an opportunity to show how sport can healthy. Then Al Kuwari; expressed that Qatar is proud to be the first Middle East Country that host the World Cup. The Minister also mentioned that the goal is to hold a successful, and healthy sports event.

Al Kuwari also expressed that Qatar looks forward to working with WHO; to leave a legacy that supports sustainable sports events. Infantino praised the new partnership between Qatar and WHO. Infantino also referred to the relation of WHO, and FIFA. Because both signed a memorandum of understanding.

The two organizations have doubled their efforts to promote the importance of physical, and mental health. Secretary-General of Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, Hassan Al Thawadi said that the partnership with WHO, will elevate, and enhance the existing efforts; to ensure that the World Cup maximizes its potential for social impact.

COVID-19

The Covid-19 has highlighted for the international community, the importance of physical activity for mental health. It is also mentioned that up to 5 million deaths could be averted if the population was more active.
