# Vietnamese War Film Captivates Audience in Islamabad

**Islamabad (TDI):** A Vietnamese historical film set against the backdrop of colonial resistance drew a packed and enthusiastic crowd in the Pakistani capital this week, offering audiences a rare cinematic view of one of Asia’s most influential independence struggles.

A special screening of “Peach Blossom, Pho and Piano” attracted a large and diverse audience in Islamabad, reflecting growing interest in Vietnamese history, culture, and national heritage.

The event was organized jointly by the Embassy of Vietnam in Islamabad and Alliance Française Islamabad as part of the second edition of the Francophone Film Mela.

Set in 1947 during the intense 60-day Battle of Hanoi against French forces, the film follows a young militia fighter, Van Dân, and his fiancée, Thúc Hương, as they risk their lives to reunite and marry before their forces are compelled to retreat.

Against the backdrop of war and uncertainty, it weaves a moving story of love, sacrifice, and resilience. The narrative is further enriched by a cast of ordinary citizens whose lives together reflect the endurance and spirit of Hanoi’s people during one of the most difficult periods in their nation’s history.

The film is layered with symbolism; peach blossoms represent hope and renewal; pho embodies cultural continuity and resilience; and the piano stands for art, refinement, and the will to preserve beauty and civilization even amid conflict.

Speaking at the screening, Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Anh Tuan said the film vividly portrays his country’s historic struggle for independence and reflects the unwavering commitment of the Vietnamese people to freedom, sovereignty, and national dignity.

He welcomed the strong turnout, noting it demonstrated a growing appreciation of Vietnam’s history and cultural traditions among Pakistanis.

The ambassador also observed that Vietnam’s independence struggle had served as an inspiration for many nations across Asia and Africa in their own movements against colonial rule, contributing to a broader era of national liberation and self-determination.

Widely praised for its poetic and deeply human approach, the film focuses on the emotional strength of ordinary citizens rather than military strategy, offering a unique perspective through the striking contrast between war-ravaged streets and the enduring presence of music, art, and romance.

It reaches a poignant climax as its protagonists choose to remain behind and defend their ideals, transforming their final stand into a powerful expression of resistance and national pride.

Participants praised the film for its compelling portrayal of Vietnam’s resilience and national spirit, describing it as a valuable contribution to cultural exchange and historical awareness between Pakistan and Vietnam.
