Los Angeles, 27 September 2022 (TDI): Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Laura Gil talked about the issue of migration. She talked about the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration.

The United States White House organized this event in which the “Interagency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela” was encouraged. She highlighted the regional efforts for migration in Latin America.

The Vice Minister of Colombia, Gil also talked about the prevention of issues related to migration. She stressed the importance of dealing with the regularization of migrants on the regional level. Vice Minister Gil also focused on combatting human trafficking.

She put her remarks related to the abuses regarding migrant smuggling. Finally, she added that the responding states must properly finance the mechanism related to migration in the region.

Los Angeles Declaration

The Declaration on Migration and Protection passed in Los Angeles is a joint agreement between the American states. It was approved by 10 June 2022.

In this declaration, it was approved that the promotion of social, political, and economic conditions for the peaceful and productive lives of people from the following countries of origin will be protected.

As per the declaration, it was added, “Migration should be a voluntary, informed choice and not a necessity.”

Further added that “…protecting the safety and dignity of all migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons, regardless of their migratory status, and respecting their human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

It was also added that international declarations for the protection and promotion of peace for the refugees and migrants will be assured.

Under the declaration, the United States agencies responsible for the management of migration will keep greater care of the migrants on its territory. The declaration also guarantees the protection of public health and social welfare of the migrants.
