Tbilisi, 8 July 2022 (TDI): US Agency for International Development (USAID) on 7 July 2022, called all nature lovers to visit Georgia. It is working to ensure the resilient and prosperous future of Georgia’s flourishing tourism industry.

USAID teamed with the US Department of the Interior in 2019 and also worked with Georgia local partners.

Georgia is a small Caucasian country located at the intersection of Asia and Europe. The rich cultural history and beautiful natural topography play a significant role in the economy of Georgia. Tourism accounted for 7.5% of GDP growth in Georgia in 2018 and 2019.

COVID-19 harmed Georgia’s tourism sector. In 2021 and 2022, Georgia was able to recover tourism and safely reopen the country to foreign visitors. USAID supported local institutes like Georgia National Tourism Administration for the recovery.

Russia’s intervention in Ukraine also caused political and economic instability in neighboring states. Tourism in Georgia is also affected by the war.

Steps to maintain the resiliency and prosperity of Georgia’s tourism

Georgia’s government knew that tourism plays an important role in the economy of the state. It took steps to open tourism opportunities. The efforts include lowering visa restrictions, fixing roads, privatizing hotels and infrastructure, and providing tax breaks to travel companies.

In addition, USAID acknowledges the critical connection between economic development and climatic change in the nation’s tourism industry.

Since 2019, USAID has collaborated with the U.S. Department of the Interior to better the administration of the nation’s national parks.  This was a big initiative to support Georgia’s tourist economy.

The objective was to persuade private sector partners to engage in attracting more daring adventurous, nature lovers, and ecotourism visitors from across the world. This step boosted economic stability in rural areas around the nation.

Furthermore, the national park system is supported by USAID with a particular emphasis on eco-tourism as a major driving force for economic development. Likewise, USAID launched a project to support cross-border cooperation to conserve and protect the parks and generate economic opportunities.

Georgia is also taking action to face the challenges of global environmental issues with USAID assistance. Small and medium-sized businesses started in Georgia to promote climate-smart agricultural growth and developing opportunities for farmers.

USAID is also assisting Georgia to modernize its energy infrastructure and encourages sources of renewable energy that are friendly to the environment.

Moreover, Georgia is collaborating with other Euro-Atlantic donors on climate protection initiatives. Germany’s development agency helped launch Georgia’s 2030 Climate Change Strategy was launched in 2020. It identifies specific actions to support the Georgian economy and international climate goals.
