# US Warns UN It Will Cut Off Resources to Venezuela’s Maduro

**United Nations (TDI):** The United States told the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday that it will enforce sanctions “to the maximum extent” to deprive Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and associated criminal networks of resources, as Russia warned that other Latin American countries could be targeted in similar actions.

US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, said transnational criminal and terrorist groups pose the “single most serious threat” to the Western Hemisphere and the United States.

He highlighted the role of Venezuela’s state-controlled oil shipments in funding Maduro’s regime and the drug-trafficking organization known as the Cartel de los Soles, which the US recently designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

The Trump administration has increased its military presence in the region, conducting maritime interdictions and warning of potential strikes on Venezuelan territory.

This month, the US Coast Guard intercepted two oil tankers in the Caribbean Sea carrying Venezuelan crude and is pursuing a third vessel. Waltz described these tankers as the primary economic lifeline for Maduro and a key source of funding for the cartel.

Venezuelan authorities rejected the US characterization of the Cartel de los Soles, calling it a “non-existent” group and denouncing Washington’s actions as a pretext for coercion.

Venezuelan UN Ambassador Samuel Moncada said there is no war or armed conflict in the Caribbean and accused the US government of presenting a threat to regional stability.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia warned that Washington’s actions could set a precedent for military intervention across Latin America, citing a US strategy document aimed at reasserting dominance in the hemisphere.

China also urged the US to halt its operations immediately and avoid escalating tensions, according to Deputy UN Ambassador Sun Lei.
