Washington (TDI): The United States has announced plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, signalling growing tensions between Washington and its European allies amid disagreements over the Iran war.
The Pentagon confirmed the move, saying the drawdown will take place over the next six to 12 months. Germany, which hosts around 35,000 US troops, remains the largest American military presence in Europe, Reuters reported.
The decision follows a public exchange between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz had criticized US strategy in the Iran conflict, saying Tehran was gaining the upper hand in negotiations and questioning Washington’s exit plan.
A senior Pentagon official described the German remarks as “unhelpful,” adding that the president’s response reflects frustration over what the administration sees as a lack of support from allies.
Officials said the troop reduction would bring US military levels in Europe closer to where they stood before the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war, when deployments were increased under former President Joe Biden.

The move is also being framed as part of a broader push by the Trump administration to encourage European nations to take greater responsibility for their own security. However, analysts say it also underscores Washington’s readiness to respond firmly to criticism from allies.
Tensions have not been limited to Germany. The US has also clashed with Spain and Italy over their positions on the Iran conflict, with Washington criticizing some allies for refusing to support military operations or provide logistical access.
President Trump has further expressed frustration with NATO partners for not contributing naval forces to efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies that has been severely disrupted during the conflict.
The Pentagon has not confirmed whether additional troop withdrawals from Europe are planned, although Trump has indicated that further reductions remain under consideration.

German officials have expressed surprise at the announcement, noting that recent engagements with US defense counterparts had been constructive. They also point out that Germany has supported US operations, including allowing the use of military bases and airspace.
The development adds strain to transatlantic relations at a time when Europe is already reassessing its security posture. Experts warn that such moves could accelerate European efforts to boost defense spending and reduce reliance on the United States.
According to officials, the withdrawal will include a brigade combat team currently stationed in Germany, while a planned deployment of a long-range fires battalion has been cancelled.
