# US inaugurates Girls Education Initiative in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Peshawar, 10 December 2022 (TDI): The Ambassador of the United States (US) to Pakistan, Donald Blome visited Peshawar on Friday. He launched the US government-funded $4 million Improving Girls Education Activity (IGEA).

The initiative was launched in cooperation with US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Shahram Khan Tarakai was also present during the launching ceremony.

This is a four-year activity that aims to provide quality education to girls in remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It will introduce public & private partnerships to improve management in public girls’ schools.

##### **Remarks by Representatives**

Donald Blome, while addressing the ceremony stated, “The US government supports Pakistan’s goal of ensuring a prosperous future for all its citizens, particularly girls.”

“We look forward to a strong partnership and fruitful collaboration with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department.

We want to strengthen education for Pakistani children, and especially girls, through this activity.” The Envoy reiterated.

During his turn, Minister Tarakai appreciated the support of the US government in strengthening girls’ education in Pakistan.

In this vein, he added, “We are positive that with the support from the US government’s Improving Girls’ Education Activity, we will be able to make school management more efficient, thereby improving school quality.”

##### **Visit of Ambassador to Benazir Bhutto Women’s University**

During his visit to Peshawar, Blome visited the Eleanor Roosevelt Corner at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women’s University.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Corner is one of the two American Spaces in the province, that provides education and learning opportunities for youth.

He participated in a panel discussion on “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.” Blome discussed combating gender-based violence through education and entrepreneurship.

Along these lines, the Ambassador stressed, “Advancing women’s economic security reduces their risk of experiencing gender-based violence. It is also an effective development strategy for the whole community.”

Notably, the US government has provided over $2 billion in development assistance to KP to support education, health, and humanitarian needs.
