Kabul, 1 September 2021 (TDI): UN officials sent an invitation to the Taliban to abide by their obligations, support the rights of women and children and allow women’s participation in public and political life. These rights include the education rights of women and protection from violence.

The Acting Executive Director of UN Women, Pramila Patten, emphasized that the actual test for Afghanistan’s government will be the inclusion of women in their governance body. She said that the immediate need of the hour is to ensure the full participation of women in public as well as political life.

Moreover, she emphasized that the Taliban must work to implement four main points for the betterment of Afghanistan. Firstly, they must guarantee equality for all citizens. Secondly, they must equal participation of women in all decision-making processes. Thirdly, they should give women full protection from gender-based threats and other violence. Lastly, they must ensure women’s full equality in the exercise of economic and political power to reaffirm their broad representation in public life.
