UK, Norway Pledge £450m in Ukraine’s Support

London (TDI): The United Kingdom has announced a substantial new military support package worth £450 million, with £350 million committed directly by the UK government and additional contributions from Norway through the UK-led International Fund for Ukraine.

The announcement comes as the UK and Germany jointly host a pivotal session of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels.

This high-level meeting convenes defense officials from over 50 allied nations with the primary objective of ramping up pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and expediting an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We must step up to deter Russian aggression by continuing to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.”

He highlighted that 2025 marks a critical year for Ukraine, urging fellow defense ministers to ensure Ukrainian forces are equipped with essential resources.

The newly unveiled aid package includes £160 million for the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment previously supplied by the UK.

Additionally, over £250 million will fund a “close fight” package featuring radar systems, anti-tank mines, and hundreds of thousands of drones—demonstrating a focused effort to fortify Ukraine’s frontline capabilities.

This strategic aid builds upon previous military pledges made by the UK government. Notably, last month Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a £1.6 billion missile agreement during London summit with European leaders.

This was in addition to a £2.2 billion loan package aimed at military support, partially backed by profits from frozen Russian assets.

Defense Secretary Healey reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine. “We cannot jeopardise peace by forgetting the war, which is why today’s major package will surge support to Ukraine’s frontline fight,” he said. “Our job as defense ministers is to put into the hands of the Ukrainian war fighters what they need

Ukraine Defense Contact Group, traditionally led by the United States, the group’s leadership transitioned to the UK following the inauguration of President Donald Trump and the US’s relative withdrawal from European defense affairs.

Despite this progress, criticism from opposition parties remains. Liberal Democrat defense spokeswoman Helen Maguire described the latest support package as “small change” and renewed calls for the UK government to seize Russian assets located in Britain to expand Ukraine funding.
