# Pakistan, UK Reaffirm Parliamentary Cooperation as High Commissioner Meets NA Speaker

**Islamabad (TDI): **British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, called on the country’s National Assembly Speaker, at the Parliament House on Tuesday.

Both dignitaries held wide-ranging discussions on bilateral relations, parliamentary cooperation, and key regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq underscored the importance Pakistan attaches to its historic and friendly relations with the United Kingdom.

He noted that the relationship between the two countries is rooted in shared democratic values, mutual respect, and strong people-to-people connections built over decades.

Emphasizing the role of parliamentary diplomacy, the Speaker stressed the need to further strengthen contacts between the parliaments and peoples of Pakistan and the UK to foster deeper understanding and harmony.

The speaker highlighted his commitment to inclusive parliamentary traditions, stating that the opposition is an integral part of Parliament.

He said that he maintains cordial relations with all members of the National Assembly without discrimination and believes in consensus-based leadership to ensure the smooth functioning of parliamentary affairs.

Speaker Sadiq appreciated the United Kingdom’s continued support for Pakistan’s democratic institutions, particularly its cooperation in strengthening the parliamentary committee system.

He informed the British High Commissioner that all Standing Committees of the National Assembly are fully functional and actively engaged in effective legislation, oversight, and accountability.

Addressing security challenges, the speaker said that Pakistan has suffered immensely due to terrorism over several decades but remains fully determined to combat this menace with resolve and perseverance. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace, stability, and the rule of law.

The speaker also briefed the High Commissioner on important parliamentary initiatives aimed at social development and inclusion.

He said that the Special Parliamentary Committee on Gender Mainstreaming and the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus are playing a proactive role in promoting women’s rights and welfare.

Additionally, he informed her that a Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights has been established in the National Assembly to safeguard and promote the rights and well-being of children.

High Commissioner Marriott appreciated Sadiq’s inclusive and non-discriminatory approach, particularly his efforts to take all members of the National Assembly along in parliamentary matters.

She reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing parliamentary cooperation with Pakistan, noting the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration between the two democracies.
