Turkey’s first-ever gold medal in Olympics welterweight boxing

Tokyo, 7 August 2021 (TDI): Busenaz Surmeneli makes a mark in Turkish sports history as she becomes the country’s first woman to win women’s welterweight boxing at the Olympics on Saturday.

The twenty-three-year-old boxer beat Gu Hong of China who won the silver medal.

The losing semi-finalists included Lovlina Borgohain of India and Oshae Jones of the United States who won bronze medals.

On winning, the young boxer thanked God and pledged to work harder and winning more accolades, while breaking more records.

Formerly, Surmeneli had become world champion at the 2019 AIBA Women World Boxing Championships held in Russia. She had also won silver and bronze medals at 2017 Women’s European Union Amateur Boxing Championships in Italy and 2019 Women’s European Amateur Boxing Championships in Spain.
