# Trump Says Venezuela Sets No Precedent for China on Taiwan

**Washington (TDI):** US President Donald Trump has said that what China does with Taiwan is ultimately a decision for Chinese President Xi Jinping, but he made clear that he would be “very unhappy” if Beijing attempted to alter the island’s current status.

In a wide‑ranging interview published by The New York Times, Trump drew a sharp distinction between China’s approach to Taiwan and his own recent military operation in Venezuela, saying the situations are not comparable.

He told the newspaper that Taiwan does not pose the same kind of threat to China that Venezuela’s government under Nicolás Maduro posed to the United States, and therefore should not be viewed through the same lens.

Asked about the possibility of Beijing using the Venezuela action as a precedent, Trump dismissed the idea, saying he does not believe Xi will move against Taiwan while he remains president, with his term ending in 2029.

“He may do it after we have a different president, but I don’t think he’s going to do it with me as president,” Trump said.

Trump said he has communicated to Xi that a forceful change in Taiwan’s status would make him “very unhappy,” though he reiterated his belief that Xi will refrain from such a move during Trump’s time in office.

The comment comes amid broader US strategy efforts aimed at deterring conflict with China over Taiwan and the South China Sea by strengthening the military capabilities of the United States and its allies.
