# Trump, Mamdani Hold Surprisingly Warm Meeting

**Washington (TDI):** In a remarkable shift from their months of harsh public exchanges, US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani appeared unusually cordial during their first face-to-face meeting at the White House on Friday.

What had been expected to be a tense encounter turned into a friendly, almost conciliatory conversation about crime, affordability, and the future of America’s largest city. The two men, political opposites in almost every sense, have long sparred over immigration, economic priorities, and public spending. Yet on Friday, both seemed content to set aside their disputes.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old state legislator preparing to take office on January 1, stood beside Trump’s desk as the 79-year-old president chatted, smiled and even tapped him on the arm. This came only weeks after Trump had accused Mamdani of being a communist and anti-Semitic, claims that were widely debunked.

“We agree on far more than I expected,” Trump told reporters after opening the Oval Office to the press. “We both want New York, the city we love, to succeed.”

Despite Trump’s history of using the Oval Office to lecture or embarrass foreign leaders, the meeting ran far warmer than his earlier prediction that it might be merely “cordial.” Instead, the conversation struck a tone that hinted at a surprising working relationship.

Mamdani echoed that sentiment, saying he appreciated that Trump chose to focus on common objectives rather than past disagreements. “There are many issues where we differ,” he said. “But today’s discussion centered on what we both want for New Yorkers.”

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only 26 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the cost-of-living crisis. Mamdani, who campaigned on freezing rents and expanding free public services such as buses and childcare, was one of several progressive Democrats who scored victories nationwide earlier this month, a night that proved disappointing for Republicans. Few had expected Trump to welcome the reminder.

Nevertheless, Trump perked up when Mamdani pressed for more housing development in New York and noted that some Trump voters had also backed him. Mamdani explained that those voters were motivated by rising living costs, a point Trump said he understood. “Some of his ideas line up with mine,” Trump remarked. “If he does well, that’s good news for me.”
