# Trump Hosts Qatari PM Following Israeli Strike in Doha

**New York (TDI):** US President Donald Trump hosted Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani for dinner in New York on Friday, just days after Israel launched an attack in Doha targeting Hamas leaders, a move that has drawn sharp criticism across the Middle East.

Tuesday’s strike, which sought to eliminate Hamas political figures based in Qatar, threatened to derail Washington-backed efforts to secure a truce in Gaza and end nearly two years of war. The attack was denounced internationally as a reckless escalation.

According to officials, Trump voiced his displeasure directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call earlier in the week, describing the action as unilateral and counterproductive to both US and Israeli interests. He also sought to reassure the Qataris that such incidents would not be repeated, Reuters reported.

The dinner, attended by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, followed a separate White House meeting between al-Thani, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Discussions reportedly focused on Qatar’s continued role as a regional mediator and on defense cooperation in the aftermath of the Israeli strike.

“Great dinner with POTUS. Just ended,” Qatar’s deputy chief of mission, Hamah Al-Muftah, posted on X. The White House confirmed the meeting took place but declined to share details.

Qatar has long served as a key broker in negotiations between Israel and Hamas, facilitating talks on a Gaza ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages, and long-term post-war arrangements for the territory. Speaking earlier this week, al-Thani accused Israel of attempting to sabotage peace efforts but insisted Doha would not abandon its mediation role.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza, which began after Hamas’s October 2023 attack that killed about 1,200 people and resulted in over 250 hostages, has since left more than 64,000 Palestinians dead, according to local health authorities. Almost the entire population of Gaza has been displaced, with UN agencies warning of famine conditions.

Israel has also expanded its military campaign beyond Gaza, striking Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and Yemen in recent months. While Israel rejects accusations of genocide, several international scholars and rights experts argue its actions in Gaza meet that definition.
