Triangular Partnership Program – UNTPP

New York, 19 January 2022(TDI): Launched in 2015 by the United Nations Department of Operational Support (DOS), the UNTPP or United Nations Triangular Partnerships Program to assist and enhance the quality and reach of United Nations peacekeeping missions.

This program has specifically focused on providing lessons and training mostly in engineering within the region of East Africa. However given the success of the program, it has expanded into providing multiple fields such as intelligence, the technology of Camp security, medicine, intelligence. surveillance, communication, computers, and reconnaissance.

Objectives

The aim is simple. To assist peacekeeping operations through providing trained workers as well as provide enhanced equipment. The troops that graduate from their trainee program will be sent to areas where their assistance is needed to allow UN missions to be effectively carried out within the regions.

The UNTPP consists of 4 main tenants, out of which the first is called, “Rapid Development”, units will be effectively and efficiently trained in horizontal tasks in regards to engineering.

This is to ensure they are able to operate and understand the workings of the engineering involved in heavy plant equipment. Through this training, they are expected to be able to deliver engineering tasks effectively and in a timely manner.

The second tenant is “Flexibility”, which entails delivering training to partner countries within Southeast Asia and Africa. The United Nations Department of Operational Support in this case ensures there are training facilitates within these countries with the best equipment available so trainees can learn effectively.

The third tenant constitutes as “Strengthening Regional Capacity”, whereby there is TOT (Training-of-Trainers), where trainers will have access to a number of courses and that it is available a number of trainers that are skilled to facilitate in capacity building and train uninformed peacekeepers within their regions.

The fourth and last tenant is “C$ISR & Camp Technologies”, whereby there is the provision of Standardized as well as mission-specific traineeships which will primarily focus on Intelligence-Surveillance-Reconnaissance (ISR), Computers (C4), Command, Control, Communications that will assist UN missions in terms of military and police specialists.

Support for the project

Through the endorsement of the “Declaration of Shared Commitments on UN Peacekeeping Operations”, within greater than 150 member nations who have promised their commitments to  “better prepare, train and equip uniformed personnel by pursuing innovative approaches, including, triangular partnerships”, this project will be supported.

To support this commitment, the United Nations has declared it will support its member states through funding along with the provision of trainers as well as equipment for the project to be successfully carried out.
