Todd Buchwald election is congratulated by the US

Washington, 12 October 2021 (TDI): The United States Secretary, Anthony Blinken; and the Spokesperson of the Department of State, Ned Price; congratulated the election of Todd Buchwald to the UN Committee Against Torture.

Blinken states that the election of Buchwald; to serve as an independent expert on the United Nations Committee Against Torture, for the 2022-2025 term; that Buchwald will continue to bring the perspective of US jurisprudence, towards preventing torture, and other inhuman or degrading treatments.

Blinken also mentions that advancing human rights, and rule of law through multilateral engagement; is a top priority for the US. The Secretary also states that it is a priority for the US to pursue those ideals around the world, and that is why they nominated Todd Buchwald.

Blinken states that the Committee Against Torture is important to address torture. The Secretary mentioned that the duty of the Council is to monitor the 171 Member States’ compliance with their obligations. Blinken remarks that those obligations can then be found on the Convention Against Torture. The US then reaffirmed its commitment to its obligation as a Member and submitted its sixth report to the Committee on 24 September.

Price joined as well to congratulate Buchwald’s election. Price also referred that Todd Buchwald is a highly qualified independent expert. Finally, the Spokesperson mentions that Buchwald also reflects the US commitment to the rule of law.
