Third International Forum on Democracy kicked off in Beijing

Beijing, 20 March 2024 (TDI): The Third International Forum on Democracy: Shared Human Values, commenced today at the Chinese Academy of History in Beijing, China, with representatives participating from across the world. 

The forum is being hosted by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) along with Central Committee State, and Council Information Office of the People’s Republic of China. 

The Organizers include Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), China Media Group (CMG), and China International Communications Group (CIGG).

The opening ceremony of the forum kick-started with the keynote speech by Li Shulei, Member of the Political Bureau, Member of the Secretariat, and Head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

Gao Xiang, President of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Shen Haixiong, Deputy Head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, President of China Media Group, and Du Zhanyuan, President of China International Communications Group also addressed the participants during the opening ceremony.

The following participants also expressed their thoughts during the opening ceremony. 

Massimo D’Alema, Former Prime Minister of Italy, Georgios Katrougkalos, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Ong Tee Keat, Former Deputy Speaker of the Lower House of the Malaysian Parliament, Wang Shaoguang, Professor Emeritus at Chinese University of Hong Kong. 

Yoichi Masuzoe, Former Governor of Tokyo, Former Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan, Pan Wei, Chair Professor at Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Macau, Director of the Institute of Global and Public Affairs. 

Peter Mwangi Kagwanja, President and CEO of the Africa Policy Institute, Kenya, Zhang Yuyan, Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, CASS Member, and Director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics, CASS. 

Abhisit Vejjajiva, Former Prime Minister of Thailand, Essam Sharaf, Former Prime Minister of Egypt, César Landa, Former President of the Peruvian Constitutional Court, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Peru, Stephen Perry, President of the 48 Group Club, UK, addressed the ceremony via video link. 

The Forum will allow participants from different countries and regions to engage in comprehensive deliberations on the origin, forms and effectiveness of multiple democratic systems. 

Most importantly the stage will allow discussion on the necessity of the coexistence of different systems in a community committed to a shared future for mankind. 

The forum will provide a platform for all countries to share their thoughts, experiences, ideas, and practices related to democracy. This would enable a worldwide debate and exchange on democracy and human values.

The forum will include parallel discussion sessions to engage in different topics including, Democracy and Modern Governance, Democracy and the Rule of Law in the Digital Era, AI and the Future of Democracy, and Democracy and Global Governance in a Multipolar World. 

The event’s main objective is to encourage international collaboration and promotion of different democratic systems and their effectiveness to help advance democracy worldwide.
