After the successful uprising, famously known as the “Jasmine revolution”, Tunisia has emerged as the Arab world’s first complete democracy. Flawless elections were held last year resulting in the foundation of a fresh Parliament having the mandate to serve the people of the country for the next five years.
The democratic electoral transitional process is exemplary for the Arab world as it was smooth and peaceful, even after four years of the downfall of the regime of a dictator. Yes, Tunisia still is a success story. The path to democracy, equality, and justice were bumpy but the steps were taken by the visionary and wise political leaders to address the basic issues of human rights, law, respect, truth, justice, and law, are worth praising.
The constitution has prevailed and is considered by the analyst as one of the most progressive and inclusive in the entire Arab world. Four years ago, much talked and debated “Arab Spring” sprouted from the country, after a young fruit vendor, Mohammed Bouazizi, took his life in a protest against the atrocities, injustice, and humiliation suffered at the hands of the local police during the despotic regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Massive protests followed and the movement started to take shape of an intense revolution resulting in the fall of the government of Ben Ali. The revolution inspired a wave of similar protests across the Middle East and North Africa. Ben Ali fled the scene causing further chaos, turmoil and crisis.
Nevertheless, Tunisians sooner took hold of their destiny and withstood the powerful storms raging to uproot the will of the nation. The country not only elected a new Parliament but hold presidential elections along with the passing of a new constitution hence began its journey of peace, prosperity, and development led by the post-revolution regime of newly elected President Mr. Beji Caid Essebsi.
The whole process of transition has harnessed a new era of hope and prosperity for the resilient, strong, and committed the Tunisian nation. It was actually the spirit of consensus that has paved the way to establish a legal, institutional, and sustainable foundation for democracy.
The cry of revolution was fairly transformed into the practical steps by the incumbent regime as they are passionately working on to have development, equal distribution of wealth, power, and resources along with welfare for the citizens of the state. Another significant step taken by the regime is to have the Ministry of Human Rights, Transitional Justice along with Truth and Reconciliation Commissions for providing relief to the sufferers of political strife, tensions, and corruption during the rage of the previous regime.
It is also wonderful to note here that the post-revolutionary Parliament has given ample space to women of Tunisia to be part of the progressive development of Tunisia. Such progressive and inspiring outlook of a country is based upon its historical legacy, past experience, and ethos of the nation that has been created by Mr.Habib Boruguiba, the first President of the country right after the independence.
Habib Boruguiba made all headways to divert the nation’s attention towards education, social equality, justice, reform, and specifical emancipation of women of Tunisia. All these steps lead to a massive imprint on the national outlook of the country resulting in what it is today.
The country is progressive, aspiring position to step up the pace for peace, success, and development. Tunisia also set an example, where the decisive action of people achieved the desired objectives within weeks.
Pakistani nation extends the heartiest felicitation to the Tunisian brethren and wishes all the Tunisians a wonderful and prosperous future at the eve of the 59th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Tunisia.
