# Texas Flood Toll Tops 100 Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

**Austin (TDI):** The number of people killed in the devastating floods that swept across Texas has climbed past 100, officials confirmed Monday, as rescue and recovery teams pressed on with their search efforts.

Among the confirmed dead are 27 young girls and camp staff members who were caught in the rising waters while attending a summer camp along a river during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

With rainfall continuing to soak already saturated ground, authorities warn the situation could worsen. Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement saying, “Heavy rain remains a threat, and we anticipate the number of casualties may increase.”

More than 1,700 personnel, supported by boats, helicopters, and trained search dogs, are involved in the ongoing operations.

President Donald Trump is expected to visit the affected region on Friday. In a briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt rejected accusations that Trump’s budget cuts to weather agencies contributed to the scale of the disaster.

“Suggesting the president is responsible for these floods is both false and deeply inappropriate during a time of national grief,” she said, emphasizing that the National Weather Service issued timely forecasts despite staffing concerns.

Describing the event as a “once-in-a-century catastrophe,” Trump noted that the scale of destruction was something “nobody saw coming.” Though he has previously advocated for states to lead disaster relief, the president has now signed a major disaster declaration, unlocking federal assistance and resources.

The worst-hit area is Kerr County, where the Guadalupe River burst its banks. At least 84 people were confirmed dead there alone, including 28 children, according to the local sheriff’s office.

One of the most heartbreaking incidents occurred at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ camp that had about 750 people on site when the floodwaters surged through. Summer camps are a cherished part of American childhood, especially in rural and scenic areas during the long school break.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz expressed his sorrow, calling the tragedy a sharp contrast to what should have been a joyful time. “These camps are where kids build lifelong memories,” he said. “And now, those moments have turned into unimaginable grief.”
