Tajikistan Pledges Green Shift at COP29

Baku (TDI): Tajikistan has announced its ambitious target to shift entirely to renewable energy by 2032.

Speaking at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, President Emomali Rahmon declared the goal of transforming Tajikistan into a “green” economy by 2037, emphasizing low carbon emissions and resource efficiency.

Rahmon highlighted that 98 percent of Tajikistan’s current electricity is generated from hydropower, placing the country among those with minimal greenhouse gas emissions.

However, he acknowledged that significant funding and effort would be essential to achieve these environmental targets.

Rahmon also emphasized Tajikistan’s reliance on cooperation with development partners and international financial institutions to advance its green energy initiatives.

Yet, a World Bank report released last week highlighted growing threats to Tajikistan’s energy and water security, warning that climate change poses substantial risks to the country’s sustainable development.

Despite two decades of strong economic growth and poverty reduction, the report noted that domestic institutions remain weak and the private sector underdeveloped, suggesting that Tajikistan’s economic progress could stagnate without urgent reforms.

The report underscored challenges such as degraded agricultural lands, looming water scarcity, and severe air pollution.

In the capital, Dushanbe, levels of particulate matter surpass regional averages, with other cities also heavily affected.

A key component of Tajikistan’s green strategy is the Rogun hydropower project, launched in 2007 and now partially operational, which is expected to provide a major boost to domestic energy generation and potentially position Tajikistan as a clean energy exporter to Central Asia.
