# Syria Reopens Embassy in Morocco After 14-Year Diplomatic Rift

**Rabat (TDI):** Syria has officially reopened its embassy in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, marking a significant step in the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries after nearly 14 years of rupture.

The reopening ceremony took place on Thursday, with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani raising the Syrian flag at the embassy building in the presence of Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

Diplomatic ties between Syria and Morocco were severed in 2012, when Rabat expelled Syria’s ambassador following the government crackdown on protests and the escalation of the Syrian civil war that began in 2011.

Relations were further strained during the rule of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, particularly due to Damascus’s support for the Polisario Front, a separatist movement that Morocco considers a threat to its territorial integrity in Western Sahara.

The reopening comes after major political changes in Syria following the fall of the Assad government in December 2024. The new transitional authorities in Damascus have moved to restore relations with several countries, seeking international support for reconstruction and economic recovery after more than a decade of conflict that severely damaged infrastructure across the country.

In recent months, Syria has engaged in diplomatic outreach aimed at rebuilding ties with Arab and regional states, signalling a broader shift toward reintegration into regional institutions and political frameworks after years of isolation.
