# UK’s Starmer Rejects Resignation Calls Amid Growing Political Pressure

**London (TDI):** British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Tuesday rejected mounting calls to step down, insisting he would continue governing despite increasing pressure within the ruling Labour Party following a major electoral setback.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Starmer acknowledged that the past two days had been “destabilising” for the government but stressed that the country expected leadership and stability rather than internal political turmoil.

“The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet,” Downing Street quoted him as telling ministers.

The political pressure intensified after one junior minister resigned and several ministerial aides also stepped down. According to reports, more than 80 Labour lawmakers have publicly urged Starmer to announce a timetable for his departure to allow an orderly leadership transition within the party.

Starmer, who became prime minister less than two years ago, has faced criticism after Labour suffered one of its worst election defeats in recent years. However, he told ministers there had been no formal move to trigger a leadership challenge.

The prime minister had earlier attempted to strengthen his position by pledging to govern with greater urgency and determination to address Britain’s economic and social challenges.

He also warned that a leadership contest could plunge the country back into political instability, arguing that voters would not forgive Labour if it repeated the turmoil that had marked British politics in the years following Brexit.

Financial markets reacted cautiously to the developments, with British government bonds recovering slightly after Starmer’s remarks, although they remained under pressure overall amid ongoing political uncertainty.
