# Starmer Dismisses Trump’s Sharia Law Claim as ‘Nonsense’

**London (TDI):** UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday rejected Donald Trump’s claim that London was moving toward adopting Islamic Sharia law, describing the remarks as “nonsense” and offering a strong defense of Mayor Sadiq Khan.

In an interview, Starmer said, “The idea of the introduction of Sharia law is nonsense, and Sadiq Khan is a very good man.” He acknowledged that he rarely disagrees with Trump but was firm that “this is one of them.”

Trump had levelled his criticism during a speech at the UN earlier this week, targeting immigration policies in Europe and accusing London of drifting toward Sharia. He also branded Khan “a terrible, terrible mayor.”

Khan, a Labour politician, made history in 2016 as the first Muslim elected mayor of the UK capital. He has since secured two re-elections, giving him the largest direct mandate of any elected official in Britain.

The US president’s remarks revive a feud dating back to 2017, when Khan condemned Trump’s proposed travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries.

Despite their contrasting political styles, Starmer, a lawyer-turned-prime minister from the centre-left, and Trump, a populist Republican, the two leaders have maintained generally constructive ties. Trump even praised the “special relationship” only last week during his second state visit to the UK, which featured a royal carriage procession and a formal banquet.

Khan, however, has been far less conciliatory. Responding to the latest comments, he accused Trump of being “racist, sexist, misogynistic and Islamophobic,” while pointing to figures showing record numbers of Americans choosing to settle in Britain.
