Seoul, 11 November 2021 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of South Korea, Chung Eui-Yong said that discussions between South Korea and the United States on a declaration to officially end the Korean War (1950-1953) is nearing completion.
The talks between the South Korean Foreign minister and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken happened at the G-20 summit in Rome this week.
South Korea Foreign Minister stated during a parliamentary session, that he recently discussed the issue with the United States about the format and contents of an end-of-war proclamation.
The 1950-1953 Korean War ended with a cease-fire rather than a peace treaty, keeping both sides technically at war.
The South Korean government has been urging for a formal declaration to end the war as a method of persuading North Korea to resume; dialogue and achieve enduring peace to the peninsula, mostly through the North’s nuclear weapons program dismantlement.
The Foreign Minister said that Korea and the United States share the conviction that the declaration will attract North Korea to dialogue.
This would achieve disarmament and peace. However, the Minister admitted that it would take time.
