Belgrade, 12 October 2021(TDI): Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Alvin Botes delivers a statement at the High Level Commemorative Meeting in Belgrade, Serbia, to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of 120 developing countries. It was founded and held its first conference in 1961. It is the world’s second-largest grouping of states after the United Nations.

Deputy Minister, Alvin Botes appreciates the Serbian Government for organizing the Meeting, also appreciates the Azerbaijan, Chair of the Movement.

Deputy Minister said that South Africa was not a part of the NAM when it was formed. However, it played a key role in promoting international solidarity against the racist Apartheid regime.

NAM began with 25 countries and has now expanded to 120 countries. A website should be created where all NAM documents since 1961 could be found, Deputy Minister added.

Furthermore Alvin Botes, Deputy Minister stated that the NAM will have to work tirelessly to address global pandemics like COVID-19, poverty and underdevelopment, peaceful conflict resolution, terrorism, climate change, human rights, disarmament, and the quest for self-determination, while remaining steadfast in our opposition to unilateral coercive measures.
