Special Envoy of Singapore for Arctic Affairs, Sam Tan delivered the closing remarks at the Russia-Singapore Arctic Dialogue

Singapore, 20 December 2021 (TDI): Special Envoy of Singapore for Arctic Affairs, Sam Tan delivered the closing remarks at the Russia-Singapore Arctic Dialogue on Friday 17th December. The dialogue was titled, “The Arctic as a Global Transport Corridor: Sustainable Arctic Shipping”. It was held in a hybrid format.

S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) and the Moscow School of Management (SKOLKOVO) organized the Arctic Dialogue. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Singapore also provided support in organizing the hybrid event. During the dialogue, speakers focused on topics such as technology and innovation for sustainable Arctic shipping.

Economic development and potential cooperation between Russian and Singaporean companies and research institutes in sustainable Arctic shipping projects were also key topics discussed in the webinar.

Closing Remarks

While addressing the closing remarks on the event, Singapore’s special envoy Sam Tan noted the importance of driving the economic development of the Arctic. He also provided sustainable solutions in the context of climate challenges. The solution can be the development of technology and innovation for sustainable shipping, the envoy told.

During the dialogue, the Singaporean Special Envoy welcomed the Russian Arctic Council Chairmanship and its focus on Responsible Governance for Sustainable Arctic. He also expressed full support to Russia in this regard on behalf of the government of Singapore.

In addition, Singapore is vulnerable to rising sea levels as a low-lying coastal state. Singapore holds plenty of interest in collaborating with international partners in the Arctic for mutual interest, as it is a barometer of climate change.
