# Silk Road Golf Championship Debuts in Almaty as Part of SCO Open Cup Initiative

**Almaty (TDI): **Golfers from across the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) region gathered in Almaty this week for the inaugural Silk Road Golf Championship, a new international tournament held under the framework of the SCO Open Cup.

The competition took place from May 27 to 30 and was organized by the Golf Federation of Kazakhstan with the participation of SCO member states and partner countries.

Teams representing Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus competed in the event, which organizers described as a platform for strengthening regional sports cooperation and promoting golf throughout the SCO community.

The tournament marks a significant step in the SCO’s broader efforts to expand humanitarian and people-to-people exchanges through sport.

Participants showcased strong performances and a commitment to fair play, underscoring the event’s emphasis on friendship and mutual respect alongside competition.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, SCO Deputy Secretary-General Sohail Khan praised Kazakhstan and its Golf Federation for hosting the championship and highlighted the country’s experience in organizing major international sporting events.

He noted that sport plays an important role in fostering trust among nations, strengthening cultural and humanitarian ties, and encouraging broader regional cooperation.

Khan also emphasized the significance of the SCO Open Cup, describing it as a new multilateral sports platform operating under the organization’s auspices.

According to the SCO Secretariat, the decision to stage the first golf tournament within the Open Cup framework was reached earlier this month during a meeting of sports officials from SCO member states in Kyrgyzstan.

The Silk Road Golf Championship reflects a growing trend among regional organizations to use sport as a diplomatic tool, bringing together athletes and officials from different countries in a spirit of cooperation.

While golf remains a developing sport in many parts of the SCO region, organizers hope the tournament will help raise its profile and encourage greater participation across member states.

With the successful conclusion of the Almaty event, SCO officials and sports federations are expected to explore additional competitions under the Open Cup banner.
