Saudi Arabia Demands UN Overhaul

NEW YORK, (TDI): Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, has reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to reforming the United Nations to improve its response to humanitarian crises.

Speaking on behalf of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Prince Faisal addressed the Summit of the Future on September 23, 2024, during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City.

At the outset, he stated, “Saudi Arabia is dedicated to actively participating in discussions to draft the ‘Pact for the Future,’ viewing it as an opportunity to enhance our reality and recognizing the importance of developing effective multilateral action to tackle present and future challenges.

This approach aims to bolster security, peace, and sustainable development for future generations.”

The Foreign Minister expressed the Kingdom’s hope that the Pact would signify a transformative shift in multilateral efforts.

He highlighted its potential to establish a modern, fair, and responsive global system that accelerates the achievement of sustainable development goals, addresses the needs of all nations—particularly developing ones—bridges the digital divide, and supports emerging economies in strengthening the international financial system.

He also underscored Saudi Arabia’s support for the UN’s vital role in establishing global norms and fostering collective action.

He emphasized that reforming the UN system is urgently needed to enable it to effectively address global security threats and development obstacles.

He pointed to the UN’s failures in ending the humanitarian crisis in Palestine and holding Israeli authorities accountable for their actions.

He warned that the ongoing inability to achieve peace, especially in the Middle East, would test the effectiveness of the “Pact for the Future.” “Stability and security are essential foundations for any development-focused cooperation,” he noted.

Regarding climate change, Prince Faisal reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment to addressing its challenges.

He stressed that energy transitions should be guided by three core principles: energy security, economic prosperity, and addressing climate change effects, all of which must be balanced.

This approach aligns with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.

The Kingdom continues its efforts in this area and looks forward to hosting the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification later this year, coinciding with the Convention’s 30th anniversary.

In closing, he reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s determination to pursue the goals outlined in the Pact, in line with the Kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030 and its commitment to enhancing global cooperation and collective action, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
