Dushanbe, 29 June 2022 (TDI): Russian President, Vladimir Putin arrived in Dushanbe and met the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon.

The Meeting
In line with the agenda of the meeting, they discussed the development of Russian-Tajikistani allied relations of strategic partnership and regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan.
Rahmon maintained that Russia is Tajikistan’s leading trade and economic partner. He, therefore, highlighted that in the first five months of the year 2022, their trade increased by nearly 50 percent.
“Our cultural and humanitarian cooperation is at a very high level. Russia is successfully completing the construction of five schools with instruction in the Russian language in Tajikistan,” said President Rahmon.
Rahmon noted their close cooperation in security and pointed out that he was prepared to discuss the status and plans concerning their relations. As well as international and regional issues with an emphasis on the situation in Afghanistan.
In a similar manner, Putin stated that their relations are strong as they work actively in all directions.
He mentioned the significant contribution made by Tajik citizens working in Russia, especially toward the development of Russia’s economy.
Regarding Afghanistan, he added that they are doing their best to normalize the situation there and trying to build relations with the political forces that control the situation.
Previous Meetings
In May 2021 Putin met with the President of Tajikistan at the Kremlin and they discussed the development of bilateral relations. As well as regional security projects, including the situation around Afghanistan.

Also in June 2019, Putin made a two-day working visit to Tajikistan to participate in the summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
Prior to the summit, Putin attended an informal dinner on behalf of the President of Tajikistan. Thus, it was in honor of the Heads of state participating in CICA.
The CICA plenary session involved discussions on issues related to ensuring regional security and countering new challenges and threats. Along with developing economic cooperation and integration processes as well as expanding humanitarian cooperation.
In addition, the two Presidents had a meeting on the sideline of the informal session of the CIS heads of state in December 2019.
Likewise, they discussed issues related to Tajik–Russian strategic partnership, also regional and international matters. Together with the implementation of measures on resolving labor migration issues with the main goal of announcing the next amnesty for Tajik migrants in Russia.
Regarding the exchange of views on regional and international matters, both parties also stressed the need to strengthen the protection of the Tajik-Afghan border.
