Moscow, 25 January 2022 (TDI): Russian President, Vladimir Putin, held a telephonic dialogue with the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez. This exchange took place on January 24, 2022.

Along these lines, both leaders focused on the need for bilateral cooperation. This cooperation is required in the field of trade, economy, and investment. Similarly, they exchanged opinions on current international affairs for the benefit of the Russian and Cuban people.

Furthermore, they deliberated on the Russia-Cuba state of friendship and mutual interests. Diaz-Canel remarked that he enjoyed the fruitful and cordial conversation with Putin. Concurrently, it manifests the excellent state of affairs between both states.

Moreover, both leaders emphasized the principles of strategic partnership as well. Most importantly, they reaffirmed their commitment to bolster bilateral relations and contacts at different levels.

Previously, Vladimir Putin called his Cuban counterpart to send greetings on the eve of Cuba’s national holidays such as Liberation Day, Christmas, etc. Henceforth, the ultimate objective behind these exchanges shows cooperation in the field of joint trade, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural assignments.

This telephonic exchange took place amid strained US-Russia relations. Recently, both states held negotiations to resolve the Ukrainian Crisis. Thereupon, analysts interpreted this strategic partnership of Russia and Cuba in terms of military deployment.

In other words, they see this strategic partnership to affect the US role in the Latin American region. But, US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, dismissed the reality behind these kinds of remarks. He called it a sort of ‘bluster’ only. Thereafter, he stated that the US can deal with the situation even if Russia moves in that direction.

In addition, Kremlin Press Secretary, Dmitry Peskov, also called these statements baseless. According to him, Russia is not involved in military-technical kind of activity with Cuba. Today, he stated these remarks in a press release.

“They are filled with solid content and, indeed, it is extremely important to synchronize positions on international and regional issues of mutual interest. This is what the heads of both countries spoke about yesterday.”

On the other hand, the Cuban Foreign Ministry also provided the details of this telephonic exchange.  The press release reaffirmed that both leaders want cordial and warm bilateral relations at various spheres. Thus, it shouldn’t be interpreted otherwise. In conclusion, the relationship between Russia and Cuba is based on traditions and bilateral frameworks.
