# Russia Calls for Revival of SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group

**Moscow (TDI):** Russia has called for the resumption of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) Contact Group on Afghanistan, saying there is broad support among member states to restart its work.

Speaking at a briefing, Russian President’s Special Representative for SCO Affairs Bakhtiyor Khakimov said Moscow sees the revival of the 2007-established mechanism as necessary to strengthen regional coordination on Afghanistan-related issues.

Khakimov said Russia maintains stable contacts with Kabul and supports expanding engagement both bilaterally and within the SCO framework, adding that consultations held in Dushanbe last year had already highlighted the need to explore ways to restart the group’s activities.

He further noted that most SCO members agree on the importance of reactivating the contact group, as regional countries continue to seek coordinated approaches to security, stability and political engagement in Afghanistan.

The proposed revival of the contact group comes amid ongoing concerns in the region over security, counterterrorism, and economic stability in Afghanistan, particularly as neighbouring countries continue to monitor developments under the current political setup in Kabul.

Analysts say a coordinated SCO platform could help align regional positions, improve communication between Afghanistan and member states, and provide a structured forum for addressing shared challenges such as militancy, cross-border movement, and humanitarian needs.

However, observers also note that any meaningful progress will depend on the level of engagement between member states and Afghanistan’s authorities, as well as the broader geopolitical environment shaping regional cooperation frameworks.
