Russia abstains from voting on UNSC resolution for Afghanistan

-

Moscow, 31 August 2021 (TDI): Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, stated that Russia had to abstain from voting on a draft resolution on Afghanistan by the United Nations Security Council. This decision was initially taken because the author of the draft had ignored Russian basic principle of concerns.

The UN Representative stated that Russia wanted to add provisions on negative effects of mass evacuation of specialists from Afghanistan and the freezing of international assets for the UNSC draft Resolution. Russia’s proposal to condemn activities of Islamic State and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement was also denied. The resolution, on the other hand, only condemned the Islamic State Khorasan group, a branch of Islamic State.

The UN Representative stated that if the provisions were added, Russia would have a different stance on voting. He emphasized that Russia will continue to support Afghanistan and wishes to see it become peaceful, stable, and drug-free.
