# Rubio Visits India Amid Shifting US Regional Diplomacy

**New Delhi (TDI):** United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday began his first official visit to India, aiming to reinforce ties with New Delhi just days after President Donald Trump held a high-profile summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Rubio started his four-day visit in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, where he visited the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity and prayed at the tomb of Mother Teresa.

Accompanied by his wife Jeanette Rubio and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, Rubio spent nearly 90 minutes at the charity’s headquarters, where he met with nuns and discussed humanitarian work for the homeless, terminally ill and leprosy patients.

Later, Rubio travelled to New Delhi for talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions are expected to focus on regional security, trade, energy cooperation and the evolving geopolitical situation in Asia.

During the visit, Rubio will also participate in a meeting of foreign ministers from the Quad alliance, comprising the United States, India, Japan and Australia, a grouping widely viewed as a strategic counterweight to China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

The visit comes amid shifting US foreign policy priorities under Trump, who last week described the United States and China as a potential “G2” during his visit to Beijing, raising concerns among some US allies about Washington’s strategic direction.

Energy security is also expected to feature prominently in Rubio’s talks, particularly after disruptions in global oil supplies caused by the ongoing US-Iran conflict and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. India, heavily reliant on imported energy, has been seeking stable oil supplies amid rising global prices.

Rubio’s visit also coincides with renewed US engagement with Pakistan, which has recently positioned itself as a mediator in US-Iran diplomacy. Observers say Washington’s warming ties with Islamabad have added a new dimension to regional politics at a time when India-US relations are navigating trade disputes and differing positions on recent regional conflicts.

Analysts believe Rubio’s trip reflects Washington’s attempt to reassure India of its strategic importance despite recent US outreach to both China and Pakistan. The visit is also being closely watched for signals on how the Trump administration plans to balance its relationships across South Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
