Report: UK Foreign Secretary’s visit to Pakistan

Islamabad, 5 September 2021 (TDI): The UK Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dominic Raab paid a two-day visit to Pakistan to discuss the prospects of working together to tackle the situation in Afghanistan. During his stay in Pakistan, from 02 to 03 September, he held official talks with the Foreign Minister of Pakistan Shah Mehmood Quraishi and Prime Minister Imran Khan. He also met Pakistan’s COAS Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa to discuss the security and terrorism-related issues in Afghanistan.

On Thursday, before meeting Prime Minister Imran Khan, Secretary Raab met his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Quraishi. Both officials exchanged views on the evolving security issues in Afghanistan. FM Quraishi highlighted the need for global collaboration to deal with the situation in Afghanistan. Additionally, they talked about mutual affairs; both affirmed that a safe and stable Afghanistan is in their interest.

Raab met Prime Minister Imran Khan in his office on the same day. PM Khan shared Pakistan’s stance on the whole Afghan Issue. He emphasized the importance of a safe and stable Afghanistan for regional peace. He said that solving the humanitarian crisis and stabilizing the economy are crucial factors in this regard. Like Quraishi, the PM also underscored the need for an international response for taking care of the situation in Afghanistan.

Dominic Raab also had a meeting with COAS Pakistan Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. As per the details released by ISPR, both “agreed to continue exploring avenues for collaboration in defense, training, and counter-terrorism domains.” Gen Bajwa said that Pakistan is committed to putting maximum efforts to ensure regional peace and stability. Sec Raab appreciated the UK-Pakistan partnership in this regard and both agreed to further strengthen their ties. On Friday, Sec Raab then visited the Turkham border which is a crucial crossing point at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. There, he was briefed on the security situation at the border.


It was the maiden tour of Foreign Secretary Raab to Pakistan which proved to be successful. This two-day visit remained crucial for the governments of both the UK and Pakistan. Overall, Sec Raab discussed the matters of mutual interest, humanitarian issues, and regional stability. The discussions on ensuring counter-terrorism measures and providing security and safe passage to Afghan evacuees were also equally significant.
