Beijing, 6 December 2021 (TDI): A Chinese Think Tank released a report on American democracy. The title of the report is, “Ten Questions for American Democracy.” Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of the Renmin University of China (RDCY) published it.

RDCY Think Tank

The RDCY Think Tank is based in Beijing. The report was released ahead of the US-led Summit for Democracy. It was established in January 2013 and has gained recognition in the research fields of global governance, macro policies, financial development, and great power relations.

Main Arguments by the Report

The Think Tank argues in the report that in recent years the US has exploited democracy for its own agenda. As a result, it caused the disintegration of its own society by the violation of human rights.

In the interim, it has also manipulated the notion of democracy to externally maintain its hegemony, meddle in the internal affairs of other states, and jeopardize the international order.

According to the report, democracy is a diversified path that is independently chosen by the people of all countries. It is a common value owned by humankind. No single entity has the right to impose its perception of democracy on others, which in itself is a violation of democracy.

The report criticized the US claims of engaging democratic diplomacy by pointing out that the only people in the US can portray Gun-cracy, Money-cracy, Drug-cracy, White-cracy, Media-cracy and Militia-cracy. Purportedly, the citizens of the US can’t make independent decisions because they are ruled by the aforementioned six masters, the RDCY claims.

Questions for the US

The Think Tank in the report urged the US to ask itself questions when holding the “Summit for Democracy.” The questions are as follows;

  1. Is American democracy a democracy for the majority or a democracy for the minority?
  2. Does it improve people’s well-being or increase their suffering?
  3. Does it ensure checks and balances or lead to abuse of power?
  4. Does it defend freedom or hinder it?
  5. Does it help realize dreams or create nightmares?
  6. Will it bring development and prosperity to other countries or disaster and turmoil?
  7. Does it protect human rights or violate them?
  8. Does it promote unity or lead to division?
  9. Will it improve national governance or lead to system failure?
  10. Will it maintain world peace and development or undermine international order?
Data cited by the Report

The report cited data to expose the notion of American “democracy,” describing how the US has dumped its presumed “democratic model” on other countries whether they needed it or not.

The American democracy has increased the suffering of the people. By the end of 2020, over 50 million Americans faced food insecurity and approximately 220,000 people are homeless.

Data cited by the report depicts that American democracy blatantly violates international order and human rights. The US has had a history of gun violence and almost 38,000 deaths were reported because of gun violence each year, out of which, 20 percent are children and adolescents with ages ranging from 1-17.

The report by RDCY claimed that ever since 1880, the US has carried out 392 foreign military interventions up till 2017. Moreover, since its establishment, it has also been at war over 92 percent of the time.

Over the years, American citizens have become dissatisfied with their government’s actions, so much so that the rate of dissatisfaction increased from 33 percent in 2017 to 50 percent in 2021. Whereas 85% of Americans believe that the political system of the US needs a comprehensive overhaul.
