# Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi Detained in Protest Over Voter Fraud

**New Delhi (TDI):** New Delhi police detained Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and several other opposition members of parliament during a protest march towards the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) office.

The demonstration was organized to raise concerns about alleged “voter fraud” and the integrity of the electoral process, according to local media reports.

Rahul Gandhi told reporters while being taken into custody, “This fight is not political, it is to save the Constitution. The fight is for ‘one person, one vote.’”

Joint Commissioner of Police Deepak Purohit confirmed the detention, explaining that the protest lacked the required permission for an event of such scale. Authorities had allowed only 30 MPs to approach the ECI office and file a complaint, but around 300 opposition leaders began marching from Parliament towards the election panel.

The protesters chanted slogans against both the Election Commission and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, accusing them of “stealing” elections. Attempts to breach police barricades led to their detention and removal by bus.

Opposition parties, led by Congress, have alleged that voter lists in several states where they lost have been tampered with, claiming names have been improperly deleted or duplicated to favor Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Criticism has also been directed at the Election Commission’s recent decision to revise voter lists in Bihar ahead of state elections later this year, with opposition figures warning that this could disenfranchise many poor voters.

The Election Commission and BJP have firmly denied these claims. The commission states that updates to voter lists are shared with all political parties and that complaints are carefully investigated. They argue that revisions are necessary to remove deceased voters or those who have moved elsewhere.

Congress and its allies have struggled in recent state elections after their relatively strong performance in last year’s parliamentary polls, where the BJP lost its outright majority and had to rely on regional partners to stay in power.

The opposition has also raised concerns over electronic voting machines and alleged irregularities in the vote counting process, accusations rejected by the election panel.
