Milano, 15 September 2023 (TDI):Â Advisor to the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari discussed the crucial role of Qatari foreign policy in a rapidly evolving multi-polar world.
The Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) in Milano, Italy, recently hosted an insightful panel discussion to highlight the role of small, and medium countries facing polarization.
During the discussion, Dr. Al Ansari shed light on the dynamic landscape of global diplomacy, emphasizing the significance of small and medium-sized countries in navigating the complexities of international polarization.
He highlighted that the current state of international affairs is characterized by a clear sense of polarization, with prevailing narratives often oversimplifying the intricate realm of global diplomacy.
Dr. Al Ansari pointed out that the global geopolitical scene has transitioned significantly since World War II, evolving from a bipolar system into a more complex multi-polar world.
He noted that Western narratives emphasize democracy, the rules-based international order, and liberal values, while the East aligns with the Global South, opposes hegemony, and champions national sovereignty and strong states.
However, he stressed that there is a noticeable discrepancy between these narratives and the actual actions of states, leading to an oversimplification of global dynamics.
In this context, small and medium-sized countries like Qatar find themselves in a unique situation that doesn’t neatly fit the prevailing East-West dualism.
Dr. Al Ansari cited Qatar as a prime example of a country facing intricate diplomatic obligations.
Qatar maintains close alliances with the United States and has played a vital role in mediating talks between the U.S. and the Taliban, as well as engaging in diplomatic dealings with countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Iran, and China.
Regarding the role of small and medium-sized countries in the East-West model, Dr. Al Ansari emphasized their potential to make a significant impact by supporting less developed nations through capacity building and alliances.
He underlined the importance of reshaping the global order and reducing tensions between major powers.
Dr. Al Ansari stressed that activating the role of small and medium-sized countries outside the traditional East-West division is crucial.

He highlighted that the concept of a single, universally applicable global model has become outdated, giving way to diverse paths based on each country’s interests and circumstances.
From an economic perspective, he suggested that Western models should evolve to become more inclusive, acknowledging that Western values may not align with the priorities of all nations.
In conclusion, Dr. Al Ansari emphasized the active role played by small and medium-sized countries in diplomacy, particularly Qatar’s model in navigating complex diplomatic interactions.
These nations are essential contributors to preventive diplomacy, mediation, practical problem-solving, and the promotion of multilateralism.
