Geneva, 7 October 2021 (TDI): Through an official statement, the State of Qatar has renewed its support for brotherly Somalia in various development projects. The multifactorial relations cover health and education, job opportunities for young people, security capabilities, and political support.

This came in the statement of Qatar’s Permanent Representative, Jawhara Al Suwaidi, at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The Council debated the situation of human rights in Somalia, under item (10) of the agenda. Different independent experts also attended the interactive dialogue.

Al Suwaidi expressed the knowledge of the State of Qatar about the worrying situation in Somalia. This includes threats to security, terrorism, the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, drought, floods, among others.

Moreover, Qatar required the Somali authorities to continue the national dialogue, and commit to holding peaceful, transparent, inclusive, and credible elections on time. Likewise, implement plans and programs, especially those related to the promotion and protection of human rights.

The representative underscored the importance of continuing to provide the necessary technical assistance to strengthen the capacity of Somali institutions. In this way, nations’ commitment to mutual cooperation will be reaffirmed.
