Islamabad, 14 October 2021 (TDI): Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan held a meeting with the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Iran, Major General Mohammad Bagheri in Islamabad.
Important matters came under discussion including the security situation in the region, Afghanistan, and bilateral relations.
Afghanistan
Regarding Afghanistan, the Prime Minister said that peace and stability in Afghanistan is crucial for Pakistan and Iran.
He said the international community must proactively engage in Afghanistan and provide economic and humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan.
Prime Minister further added that unfreezing Afghanistan’s financial assets abroad would support Afghan people at this pivotal juncture.
While reiterating the importance of national reconciliation and inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan, he also said the coordination of six neighboring countries of Afghanistan must be continued.
In September 2021, Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi hosted the first virtual meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan’s six neighbors.
Pak-Iran Ties
The Prime Minister described Pak-Iran border as border of ‘peace and friendship’.
He highlighted the importance of steps taken on both sides to improve border security. And also showed resolve to foster trade, economic and energy cooperation with Iran.
The prime Minister applauded Iran’s continued support on Jammu and Kashmir issue especially by the Supreme Leader.
Other Engagements
The Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Iran, Major General Mohammad Bagheri also held meetings with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Pakistan, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee (JCSC), General Nadeem Raza, and the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi.
